In Catalonia the most important culinary tradition is making the 'Mona de Pascua' cake.
The tradition, that dates from the 15th century, is that the “mona” is the present that the godfather (or the godmother) give to his godson in Easter.
Mona’ is a word derived from the Arabic word ‘munna’meaning ‘gift’.
Originally, marzipan cakes decorated with boiled eggs, but these days more likely to be substituted by figures made in chocolate.
Chocolatiers and bakers compete to make the most spectacular 'Mona de Pascua'.
